Look on this ammo’s box and you’ll see the designation “XM193BLX.” It’s less complicated than it sounds. The first X means it is made for the civilian market; M193 is the Army’s designation for the M4 carbine’s most basic type of 5.56 ammo; and the BLX at the end means this particular ammo is loose-packed in a box of 100.
55 grains is the most popular bullet weight for 5.56 ammunition, and the FMJ is the most common type of bullet. This round’s bullet also has a boat tail (the “BT” in “FMJBT”), which is a tapering base that essentially makes the bullet more aerodynamic. It’s part of the reason why this cartridge retains nearly 66 percent of its starting velocity at 300 yards, which conveys a nice and flat trajectory.
